Project Background

Built pre-famine in 1837 under the patronage of Justin McCarthy of the McCarthy's of Cork and South Desmond. It went out of use in 1963 and fell into dereliction. We began this project renovation in 2004 and completed the project in less than 12 months. Due to the sensitive nature of the building this project first needed an archeological survey before any work could commence. Following the survey and liaison with An Taisce the building was sympathetically restored and converted into a 3 bedroom home.

Materials and construction methods used

Many of the original materials and features were preserved and restored to their former glory while converting it into a family home suitable for contemporary living. The contemporary aspects include: under floor heating, marble and solid oak floors, en suite bathrooms and high spec wet rooms which sit comfortably along side salvaged unique spiral staircase, hydraulic lime re-pointed stone walls, reclaimed brick, original restored main entrance door and original cast iron roof trusses.

Renovations

At Linehan Construction we have the skill and ability to undertake virtually any restoration project within Ireland. Our team of highly qualified craftsmen have vast experience in building conservation.

Historic construction projects can be classified into one of the following categories:

Preservation - Historic preservation occurs when the existing materials are left intact, rather than replaced, improving upon surrounding elements where needed.

Restoration - Historic restoration takes into account the structure’s most significant time period and recreates the elements accordingly.

Rehabilitation - Historic rehabilitation allows the property to function as a contemporary structure, while maintaining its heritage and cultural values.

Reconstruction - Using all new materials, historic reconstruction rebuilds a previously non-usable space from the ground up. If you are not sure how your historic restoration project should be handled, we are available to help you with the planning, design stages and full construction.
